I am delighted to let you know that we have appointed John Palmer as our new Director of Fundraising and Marketing
John has extensive experience working in national charities including MS Society, Scouts and Oxfam and is currently working as a consultant and is also chairing a major capital appeal for Loughborough university
He will start with us next Thursday 4 May and work 2 days a week during May, June & July while he completes his consultancy commitments and then start full time in August
The whole Fundraising team were involved in the final interview day and they unanimously endorsed John as their preferred candidate, as did the executive team and we are excited to welcome him next week to the Isabel team
John has emailed to say:
“My personal passion is helping not-for-profit organisations achieve real impact through better engagement with our supporters, more effective fundraising, and delivering long-term policy, attitudinal and behaviour change. All very relevant for our future here together at Isabel Hospice.
I have been lucky enough to work for many great charities: including Mencap, Oxfam (…for over 13 years), The Scout Association, and more recently as Executive Director of Marketing and Communication at the MS Society.
I have also spent time working in the commercial sector as a director of a communications consultancy in the City, where I led teams on a range of public awareness campaigns including the life-saving spotting stroke symptoms actFAST campaign, HeadSmart and with NCPC on Dying Matters. I also worked at the National Centre for Social Research where I led the relaunch of the British Social Attitudes Survey and several high profile social research projects including a review of end-of-life care services.
And I am a product of Hertfordshire - I was born in Hitchin and now live in Harpenden, where my wife Claire and I have brought up our 3 children (Eleanor 18, James 17 and William 11).
Outside of my duties as a 24-hour/7 day a week unpaid Uber driver for the kids, I spend my time tinkering with my 25-year-old VW camper van (…currently parked up in the Common Woods campsite behind the Hospice!), trying to stay awake late into the night to follow a newly found interest in astronomy… and as Chair of Trustees at Loughborough Students Union.
I have a strong commitment to (…and understanding of) the Hospice movement and the positive impact that we have on our society. I have worked with hospices and clinicians on the development of Dying Matters Campaign, and more recently I have had a close personal experience of excellent hospice care here in Hertfordshire.
I’m looking forward to working with you all at Isabel Hospice as we start to plan for an exciting future.”
I am sure you will join me in making John very welcome as he starts with us next week
