Hospice Care Week 2017

9th - 15th October

During this week we will join forces with up to 200 other hospices across the UK to celebrate the diverse range of people involved in providing and supporting hospice care.

The theme for Hospice Care Week (9-15 October)  is “We are hospice care.”

From nurses to volunteers, chefs to chaplains and corporate partners to carers, the awareness- raising week will celebrate the contribution of everyone involved in hospice care.

We will be posting photos of our staff, volunteers, donors and supporters and encouraging members of the public to share these using the hashtag #WeAreHospiceCare

Here, Susie, talks about teamwork for Hospice care

"I’m Susie, and I’m an Isabel Clinical Nurse Specialist, working in the community. My job involves caring for, and supporting, patients in their own homes, often for many months and years.

I’m part of an amazing, diverse Hospice team, offering an active care plan that is not intended to cure a patient’s underlying disease, but focuses on enhancing comfort and quality of life as well as reducing physical and emotional pain.

Later in their journey they might be admitted to our In-Patient Unit for a short period to help sort out a particular symptom, or to give them and their family a break from the intensity of caring and supporting a loved one before they return home.

Patients are able to stay at home for longer, often because they use our 24 hour Urgent Advice Line, where our medical colleagues take calls from patients or their carers who need reassurance and medical advice or support.

Naturally there are moments of sadness in our daily work at the Hospice, but there’s so much love and happiness too, I get to meet so many wonderful families. I really love hearing about their lives and witnessing special relationships. It’s an absolute honour to be able to make a difference. There are always great fundraising events going on, too, and it’s so much fun supporting those! As a Hospice, we have a great community of supporters who also get involved and getting to see them first hand always makes me smile.

It's all about teamwork
