On Your Bike

Our best ever On Your Bike was held on Sunday 22nd May with 470 cyclists taking on the challenge of either a 25k, 50k or 100k distance.

Events Manager, Beth Hardy said “We were delighted so many people took part in On Your Bike, with many having ridden in this event year after year. It is a very inclusive community event rather than a race, which is what makes it so popular. People take part from all over our catchment area of eastern Hertfordshire, of all riding abilities and all ages.

The 25k route sees lots of families taking part, as well as those who don’t bike ride on a regular basis. The first person home on the 25k distance was Matthew Johnson from Bishop’s Stortford (photo included). The 50k route is very popular with all ages and fitness levels. The first person home for this distance was Steve Parrott (photo of Steve and Renee Friend, Isabel Hospice volunteer). The 100k route is taken on by those who like a challenge and this year, the first person home was Andrew Yeoman from the Bishops Stortford Cycling Club (photo to come).

On Your Bike goes through Manuden, Stocking Pelham, Patmore Heath, Farnham, Antsey, Great Hormead, Furneux Pelham and Saffron Walden. The village routes are beautiful and we always get lots of positive comments from the participants as well as the route marshals as they sit in some beautiful locations!

So far over £10,000 has been raised and we expect that total to rise as sponsorship is collected. We will be awarding a brand new bike to the cyclist who raises most sponsorship courtesy of Go Outdoors.

We would like to thank Keith Warnell, Mayor of Bishop’s Stortford who opened On Your Bike and everyone who took part and for raising sponsorship for Isabel Hospice. A special thank you goes out to the Hospice bike marshals and volunteers for kindly giving up their time to make the event possible, this also includes the Bishops Stortford Rotary club.  Thanks also to Chris Davies, manager at Bishop’s Stortford Rugby club for kindly letting the Hospice host On Your Bike at the club for the past seven years, to East Herts Police, Raynet, the Red Cross, East Herts District Council, Bishop’s Stortford Town Council, Best Digital, Race Radar Timing, Mr H Productions, Pukka Tukka, Timewise events, Sharon Kaplan Photography and Tom Hoey Photography,Go Outdoors in Harlow, Nuffield Health Sawbridgeworth, Injury Active Clinic, Nestle and Eat Natural for supporting the event.

Rest stops and water points for our cyclists were kindly supplied by The Catherine Wheel in Albury, The Beehive Pub in Hare Street, The Tally Ho in Barkway, The Bull in Langley Lower Green and the Three Tuns in Great Hormead. “

Many people were riding in memory of loved ones who had been cared for by the Hospice, whilst others were taking part just for fun!
