For those who regularly drop off goods at our Donation Centre in WGC, you will immediately recognise Brian and his brilliant, welcoming smile.
Brian previously worked at an Age UK shop for 5 years, which was based at Hall Grove where the Isabel Hospice Living Well is now based. He worked with his great friend Jenny, whom he has known for 20 years after meeting at college, until the shop closed, and they decided to volunteer with Isabel together.
“It has helped me so much here– you wouldn’t believe how much I have changed since I came”, says Brian. “I’ve struggled with confidence since I was a teenager and since I’ve been here, it’s the best I’ve ever felt in my life. I never used to socialise much, and it has been a struggle, but I’ve come through it now and I never thought I would. Since I’ve been here – I just love it! Volunteering at the Donation Centre has encouraged me to speak to so many people. When people arrive, you must speak to them and over time I learnt how to. I chat to the ladies in the warehouse, and the drivers and Katie my manager. Katie has helped me a lot. She’s just wonderful; so supportive, caring, kind and genuine!”
Brian volunteers three mornings a week and other times when needed. He also helps with the Fundraising events; setting up all the candles for Carols in the Chapel, Bubble Rush at Woodhall Estate and the Lights of Love every Christmas at the Campus roundabout. He has introduced his friend Rob whom he knew from when they both worked at the council in Hatfield in the 1980’s. “We never really spoke at work – we just used to nod to each other. He used to drive a van and I was outside” laughs Brian. Over time their friendship grew and now they meet for coffee or lunch once or twice a week in town.
“I’ve never known so many people since I’ve worked here – its just opened up a whole new life for me.”
