A green initiative launched by Isabel Hospice has helped save 674 tonnes from landfill in its first six months.
More than 84,000 bags of unused or unwanted items have been donated to our 15 charity shops, donation centre and mobile donation days since Tonnes of Care was launched on Earth Day 2022 back in April – helping to fund an incredible 37,070 nursing hours.
Schools, businesses and community organisations have been among those who have pledged their support to our sustainability drive to help pay for the vital care and support the Hospice provides to those diagnosed with a terminal or life-limiting illness, and their families.
Our Head of Retail Charlotte Greenwood said: “As far as we are aware, our Tonnes of Care sustainability initiative is the first of its kind within the hospice sector, and we have been absolutely thrilled by the response from the public over the past six months since launching.
“Over the next five years, we aim to save 25,000 tonnes from needlessly ending up in landfill, and we would like to thank those who have already pledged to support us in achieving this for helping to get Tonnes of Care off to such a fantastic start.
“By donating good quality items that they no longer want or need to us to sell in our 15 charity shops and online eBay, Vinted and Depop stores, conscientious consumers and green-minded businesses are not only helping to lessen their environmental impact, but are helping to make a positive difference to the lives of local people by helping to fund vital nursing hours.
“Donations to our shops have played a massive part in keeping our services running for the last 40 years since the Hospice was first founded, and everyone who signs up to support Tonnes of Care is making sure everyone in their community receives the life-changing care and support they deserve when they need it the most.”
One of the biggest supporters of Tonnes of Care has been Great Amwell-based Van Hage Garden Centre, which has collected 1,169 bags at three donation days in recent months, helping to fund 524 nursing hours. The family-run business will be hosting another mobile donation point on 14th and 15th November from 10am to 2pm.
Isabel is always on the lookout for new venues to host a mobile donation point, and is particularly keen to find suitable indoor venues so people can continue donating through the colder winter months.
The Hospice is currently in need of good quality autumn/winter clothing and accessories, homeware, vintage items and collectables to sell.
Charlotte added: “Our shops are busier than ever, and we continually need new stock to replenish our shelves and rails to meet demand from our customers. So, if you are having a clear out, then please consider getting behind Tonnes of Care – you’ll not only be doing your bit for the planet, but your support also means the world to the families who rely on our expert, compassionate care.”
You can get involved here, or why not pop along to your nearest Isabel Hospice shop or mobile donation point to find out more. If you have items you would like to donate, then please check what we can and cannot accept.
