Volunteer Spotlight - Lara Sanders - Isabel Hospice

Meet Lara – who works Monday to Friday for Isabel Hospice as our People Systems Administrator, playing a key role in supporting all of our volunteers. But Lara’s commitment to helping others doesn’t stop there. In her spare time, she also gives back to the community as a volunteer herself, where she supports young people as part of Isabel Hospice Children and Teen Support (CATS) volunteer group.

Here, we ask Lara about her volunteering journey…

  1. What inspired you to become a volunteer with Isabel Hospice?

I have the privilege of focusing on our incredible team of volunteers every day, who are truly at the heart of everything we do at Isabel Hospice. Seeing the meaningful impact Isabel Hospice has on the community and the role our volunteers play has been inspiring. When I received an email from Family Support asking to help advertise for CATS Group volunteers, I saw this as an exciting opportunity where I could get involved more personally.

Having recently graduated with a degree in psychology, I saw this as a fantastic opportunity to continue supporting Isabel Hospice while applying my skills and knowledge. I especially enjoyed studying developmental psychology, with a focus on attachment in children, so I understand how bereavement and the loss of a parent/family member can profoundly affect this.

I also think it is important to give back and help your local community too, where you’re able.

  1. In what ways has volunteering with Isabel Hospice impacted you?

It’s been incredibly rewarding to support children during such a difficult time. From a psychology perspective, I have found it interesting to see how they connect their artwork to their emotions, offering real insight into how creative expression can support bereavement. Seeing them open up in a safe space and knowing I’ve helped, even in a small way has been so meaningful. It’s great to see another side of the hospice too and gain a broader understanding of the services we offer.

  1. What would you say to someone considering volunteering?

Go for it! If you have a passion or some spare time, volunteering is a fantastic way to make a real difference. Working at Isabel Hospice has given me a deeper understanding of the resources required to deliver these vital services. By volunteering, you’re not only helping Isabel Hospice continue to make a positive impact on so many lives, but you’re also gaining valuable experience and transferable skills that can benefit you in the future. I’d recommend it to anyone thinking about it and it’s a great way to meet new, like-minded individuals too.

  1. If you had to describe volunteering at Isabel Hospice in three words, what would they be?

Transformative, eye-opening, meaningful
